The scheme comprises a combination of studios, ‘super studios’ and self-contained two-bedroom apartments totalling 128 beds over seven storeys, on a tight city centre site. Portobello House sits within the University of Sheffield campus, near to the Sir Robert Hadfield and Amy Johnson buildings. It is within easy walking distance from the main University, is half a mile from Sheffield Hallam University and is located right next to Sheffield train station.

Roscoe were engaged from concept design stage through to delivery when we were novated across to main contractor, Torsion Group.

Features/Challenges

  • Five storey steel framed building.
  • Composite steel and concrete floor solution.
  • Shallow depth beams adopted to ensure minimal structural zone is achieved following late decision to change to hot-rolled frame.
  • Bearing foundations adopted.
